Museum Director Angelita Teo has worked at the museum in various capacities for over 15 years. Come meet her as she takes you on a special tour of the museum. Get a glimpse of what the museum will become as Angelita shares her thoughts and aspirations for the museum during the tour.
Angelita was appointed Director of the National Museum of Singapore in July 2013. Armed with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Anthropology, from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, Angelita started her museum career with the Asian Civilisations Museum as an Assistant Curator in 1996. After a stint in the private sector, she joined the National Museum of Singapore in 2002 and was one of the key personnel responsible for the museum’s S$132.6 million redevelopment. The redevelopment project involved the conservation of the then existing 121-year old historic building and the construction of a new extension building. The redeveloped museum is 20,296sqm in size with 4,600sqm of permanent galleries, showcasing the history of Singapore, and attracts about 900,000 visitors annually.
Angelita became Deputy Director of the National Museum in January 2008, managing all aspects of the museum’s daily operations, including estate, exhibition and hospitality functions. She also supervised the museum’s business development team, which generated revenue for the museum through venue rentals, corporate memberships and events. Apart from her quest to reach out to new audiences, Angelita also oversaw the Museum’s largest revamp of its permanent galleries to date, which were re-opened in in the year 2015 in celebration of Singapore’s Golden Jubilee.
Angelita holds a Master in Art Curatorship from the University of Melbourne under the National Heritage Board scholarship programme. She concurrently heads the Board’s Festivals and Precinct Development, Retail and Merchandising, and Museum Roundtable Divisions, and is the Festival Director behind flagship events Singapore Night Festival and the Singapore Heritage Festival, which showcase Singapore’s cultural vibrancy and celebrate collective memories to over 1.8 million visitors.
